European Court to Decide if Islamic Sharia Law Can Override a Nation's Civil Law | CBN News: "Can Islamic religious sharia law override a country's domestic law in Europe?
That's a question the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights is weighing.
...Christian Concern, a non-profit organization based in London, intervened in the case "because of the importance of the case in European law and its implications for countries across Europe, including the UK," according to a news release from the organization.
...Dieppe said an estimated 85 sharia courts are already operating in the UK.
The case, Molla Sali v. Greece, deals with a dispute over an inheritance.
After her husband died, Sali inherited his entire estate under his will written according to Greek law.
However, two sisters of the husband say sharia law should govern how the inheritance is divvied up because the man was a member of the Muslim community in Thrace, and the mufti should oversee that process.
A mufti is a Muslim legal expert in religious law.
...Rulings handed down by the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights cannot be appealed.
The Court is expected to issue its decision in the next few months."

"This paper published in 2012 has much relevance to my post a couple of days ago about ocean temperatures:
A new study contrasting ocean temperature readings of the 1870s with temperatures of the modern seas reveals an upward trend of global ocean warming spanning at least 100 years.
The research led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego physical oceanographer Dean Roemmich shows a .33-degree Celsius (.59-degree Fahrenheit) average increase in the upper portions of the ocean to 700 meters (2,300 feet) depth.
The increase was largest at the ocean surface, .59-degree Celsius (1.1-degree Fahrenheit), decreasing to .12-degree Celsius (.22-degree Fahrenheit) at 900 meters (2,950 feet) depth.
The increase was largest at the ocean surface, .59-degree Celsius (1.1-degree Fahrenheit), decreasing to .12-degree Celsius (.22-degree Fahrenheit) at 900 meters (2,950 feet) depth.
..."The significance of the study is not only that we see a temperature difference that indicates warming on a global scale, but that the magnitude of the temperature change since the 1870s is twice that observed over the past 50 years," said Roemmich, co-chairman of the International Argo Steering Team. "This implies that the time scale for the warming of the ocean is not just the last 50 years but at least the last 100 years."...
The significance of course is that the warming of the oceans began long before any impact from CO2 emissions.
HH Lamb has written extensively about how sea temperatures in the Atlantic fell radically during the LIA.
Is the warming trend since then merely a return to earlier conditions?"

The Canadian Mind: A Culture So Open, Its 'Brains Fall Out' | Trending
"The Canadian national temper is a funny thing, riddled with contradictions.
It is plainly an abstraction, and yet it does seem to have discernible traits.
Some jokingly regard it as absurdly apologetic -- a Canadian is someone who says “sorry” when he is jostled.
Canadians are polite and amiable, pacifist by nature; they are the world’s peacekeepers.
Canadians regard themselves as morally superior, especially with regard to Americans.
Canadians are inwardly attracted to failure, as Margaret Atwood contended in Survival -- Canadians have a will to lose as powerful as the American will to win.
And so on.
...Any nation the preponderance of whose citizens...
- regularly elects left-wing political parties;
- accepts single-payer healthcare;
- believes in the efficacy of the welfare state;
- endorses the hoax of global warming...;
- accommodates swarms of third-world immigrants and refugees who have no love for or understanding of a country becoming an open-to-all multicultural tombola with the highest proportionate rate of immigrants in the Western world;
- has allowed its educational industry, from pre-school to graduate school, to be corrupted possibly beyond retrieval by lockstep Leftism, “diversity and inclusion,” and “social justice” claptrap;
- has caved to the feminist and campus-rape fable;
- dutifully takes CBC Leftist propaganda as gospel;
- has fallen for the 16th Century meme of the “Noble Savage” in its dealings with the aboriginal peoples;
- extravagantly celebrates a second-rate rock band like The Tragically Hip and names a street after it;
- reads (when it does read) tedious scribblers like the acclaimed Joseph Boyden and Ann-Marie MacDonald;
- and gives a complete ignoramus like Justin Trudeau a majority government on the strength of name and coiffure,
Unlike the U.S., there are no cracks, to quote Leonard Cohen, where the light gets in.
The Canadian political, cultural and academic spectrum has gone dark from end to end..."

Hillary Clinton Calls for Incivility Against Republicans
Hillary Clinton Calls for Incivility Against Republicans:

Plausible deniability. That's what Hillary Clinton now has if Republicans are injured or killed by the mobs. She wasn't calling for "violence," just incivility toward political opponents.
The problem is that, as McCotter points out, her words have enabled thousands of crazies who believe the hysteria against Republicans and Trump that has been ginned up by those who know exactly what they're doing when they seek to create an atmosphere of violence and hate.

"In the highly controversial area of human intelligence, the ‘Greater Male Variability Hypothesis’ (GMVH) asserts that there are more idiots and more geniuses among men than among women. Darwin’s research on evolution in the nineteenth century found that, although there are many exceptions for specific traits and species, there is generally more variability in males than in females of the same species throughout the animal kingdom.
Evidence for this hypothesis is fairly robust and has been reported in species ranging from adders and sockeye salmon to wasps and orangutans, as well as humans.
Multiple studies have found that boys and men are over-represented at both the high and low ends of the distributions in categories ranging from birth weight and brain structures and 60-meter dash times to reading and mathematics test scores.
There are significantly more men than women, for example, among Nobel laureates, music composers, and chess champions—and also among homeless people, suicide victims, and federal prison inmates.
...on April 3, 2017, our manuscript was officially accepted for publication.
...Coincidentally, at about the same time, anxiety about gender-parity erupted in Silicon Valley.
...No sooner had Sergei posted a preprint of our accepted article on his website than we began to encounter problems.
On August 16, a representative of the Women In Mathematics (WIM) chapter in his department at Penn State contacted him to warn that the paper might be damaging to the aspirations of impressionable young women..."

Ben Shapiro: Media tries to gaslight voters as Democrats openly embrace 'mob politics' - Washington Times:
Mr. Shapiro called the media behavior “gaslighting,” or manipulating someone into thinking a threat that he sees is all in his own mind.
“The media are doing their best to try and cover for this,” Mr. Shapiro said Wednesday. “So you have this conflict that is now happening, the gaslighting that is happening, where Democrats are openly stating — openly — that they are in favor of mob politics, that they are fine with mob politics. They’re fine with people showing up at restaurants and yelling at people. They are fine with people trying to beat down the 13-ton bronze door at the Supreme Court. They are fine with folks screaming at senators in elevators. They are fine with all of these things.”

"It’s probably important to preface any conversation on morality by noting that humans often struggle—mightily—to agree on what morality is.

It’s an extraordinary difference, and it helps explain why many liberals and conservatives in America think “the other side” is bonkers.

...Morality and the "Other Side"
What Haidt found is that both conservatives and liberals recognize the Harm/Care and Fairness/Reciprocity values.
Liberal-minded people, however, tend to reject the three remaining foundational values—Loyalty/betrayal, Authority/subversion, and Sanctity/degradation—while conservatives accept them. It’s an extraordinary difference, and it helps explain why many liberals and conservatives in America think “the other side” is bonkers.

...I’ll be interested to hear what readers think of Haidt’s thesis. But remember, this is a bit of a catch-22: if one reflexively smashes Haidt’s theory, it may only be evidence that this person is living in a moral matrix himself.

"It's that time of the year again when we find out how deep in the red our country is thanks to the 2018 edition of the Mercatus Center State Fiscal Rankings.
The study authors, Eileen Norcross and Olivia Gonzalez, find that when you rank states by their fiscal health, you can identify the best and worst state.
But the scariest finding is that no state is really fiscally healthy.
...Based on the most recent government data available for all states, this year, the top five most fiscally solvent states, from one to five, are Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Florida, and Oklahoma.
...The bottom five states in terms of fiscal solvency, from 46 to 50, are Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Illinois.
...I'd caution the healthier ranked states to temper their excitement.
That top ranking is a little like a kid bragging about getting the best grade in math when it's a C+ and the class average is closer to an F."

Democrats Consider Becoming 'More Ruthless' After Losing Brett Kavanaugh Battle:

In all seriousness, how can Democrats become “more ruthless” than they have already been without resorting to violence?
The Politico piece is utterly deranged in its fact-free premise, including anti-science nonsense such as, “Democrats keep playing by a set of rules.”
What?
Are we talking about the same Democrats who violated every norm to hold onto Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations against Kavanaugh until it could do the maximum damage? Are we talking about the same Democrats who used procedural trickery to pass Obamacare? The same Democrats who nuked the Senate filibuster? Who politicized the FBI to try to frame Trump as a Russian spy? Who weaponized the IRS against the Tea Party?...........
