FBI arrests ex-Puerto Rico officials for disaster aid-funded payoffs
FBI arrests ex-Puerto Rico officials for disaster aid-funded payoffs:
The FBI has arrested two former Puerto Rico officials for funneling disaster aid payments to politically connected contractors.
The Wednesday arrests have prompted concern on Capitol Hill that the island’s corruption will blunt the effectiveness of a recently passed disaster aid bill. Rep. Ral Grijalva, D-Ariz., has called for Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossell's resignation, according to the Washington Post.
The FBI indictment charges Puerto Rico's former Education Secretary Julia Keleher, former Health Insurance Agency Chief ngela vila-Marrero, and four others with crimes related to grifting U.S. disaster aid. Keleher and vila-Marrero both served in Rossell's administration before leaving in April and June, respectively.

_ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.
...He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.
As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.
...The most conservative scientific estimate that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years, said Brown...
...The European Community is talking about a half-cent levy on each kilowatt- hour of fossil fuels to raise $55 million a year to protect the rain forests, and other direct subsidies may be possible, he said."

Donald Trump confirms ICE sweeps to begin Sunday - Washington Times:
President Trump confirmed that deportation sweeps will begin Sunday in about 10 major U.S. cities, saying it’s impossible to keep such a “major operation” secret from the public.
“There’s nothing to be secret about,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “The word gets out because hundreds of people know about the major operation. It starts on Sunday, and they’re going to take people out, and they’re going to bring them back to their countries, or they’re going to take criminals out, and put them in prison.”
