"Business model" that lies to the public not working?-----US newspapers face 'extinction-level' crisis as Covid-19 hits hard | Media | The Guardian

US newspapers face 'extinction-level' crisis as Covid-19 hits hard | Media | The Guardian

  • The decrease in advertising was swift, as businesses tightened spending due to the economic impact of Covid-19.
  • Experts fear that after newspaper layoffs amid coronavirus, many places may never return to normal.

As journalists across the US scramble to cover the impact of the coronavirus, they are grappling with a bitter irony: as demand for their stories soars, the decline of the business model that funds them is speeding up catastrophically..."

Sneering at us little people-----Coronavirus & Alex Berenson -- Shut Up, the Experts Explained | National Review

See the source imageCoronavirus & Alex Berenson -- Shut Up, the Experts Explained | National Review
"People whose expertise has been questioned often respond in ways that further alienate the skeptics.
A good illustration comes from Vanity Fair’s profile of Alex Berenson, a leading advocate of the view that lockdowns are too strict.
Berenson was one of the first journalists to point out that the IHME model, on which so many states rely, drastically overestimated hospitalizations — even after multiple revisions, and even after taking the effect of lockdowns into account.
Here is the response from Gregg Gonsalves, assistant professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Medicine, as quoted by Vanity Fair:
Models are not crystal balls. A modeler is giving you a range of potential outcomes. What he [Berenson] is doing is what a lot of people who don’t understand science do, they take the uncertainty built into a model and say, “Oh, well, it shows these people don’t know what they are talking about.” He is playing with scientific uncertainty in order to say, “See, I know what is right here.” He is somebody with a messianic complex. And to be clear, all of the models say this is going to be one of the worst epidemics we have ever faced.
Note the arrogant tone, the name-calling, and the argument from authority.
This is how Professor Gonsalves intends to win over the skeptics?...

California city dumps 37 tons of sand into a skate park to prevent kids from skating during coronavirus lockdown - TheBlaze

California city dumps 37 tons of sand into a skate park to prevent kids from skating during coronavirus lockdown - TheBlaze:

Image result for Flicker commons San Clemente skate parkThe State of California, however, is so determined to keep people apart that they closed all parks effective April 1st, thus removing one of the few places for outdoor activities. However, some kids in the city of San Clemente apparently did not take the warning seriously enough and continued to skate in a local park as a way to blow off steam.
The city of San Clemente wasn't having it, however, and filled the park — at taxpayer expense — with 37 tons of sand in order to prevent kids from skating there while the lockdown continues.

Governors: Facebook Contacted Us About Protests, Not Other Way Around
"Governors have denied reports that they instructed Facebook to remove pages promoting protests against strict stay-at-home orders, saying that the company reached out to them — not the other way around.

  • The Nebraska governor’s office told Breitbart News: The Governor’s Office is not aware of any Facebook events regarding COVID-19 protests, and has not requested Facebook to pull any events down. Facebook reached out last week to learn more about Nebraska’s social distancing restrictions, and the Governor’s staff provided already publicly available information about Nebraska’s ten-person limit and Directed Health Measures.
  • New Jersey’s governor issued a similar denial: “”The governor’s office did not ask Facebook to remove pages or posts for events promoting lifting the provisions of the governor’s stay-at-home order.”
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed in a press conference Monday that the California Highway Patrol had issued a permit for a protest in vehicles that observed “social distancing” requirements. Breitbart News has reached out to Newsom’s office for comment about Facebook’s reported actions.
  • Earlier Monday, CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy reported that Facebook had taken down pages linked to protests against the “quarantine.” He specifically mentioned California, New Jersey, and Nebraska.
...Politico originally reported: “Facebook shuts down anti-quarantine protests at states’ request.”
The article noted: “The world’s largest social network has already removed protest messages in California, New Jersey and Nebraska from its site at the urging of state governments who say those events are prohibited by stay-at-home orders, a [Facebook] spokesperson said” (emphasis added)..."

'Experts' Float Trial Balloon: Hey, What if We Closed Grocery Stores While We're at It? | News and Politics

'Experts' Float Trial Balloon: Hey, What if We Closed Grocery Stores While We're at It? | News and Politics
"Earlier today after I made my coffee I noticed we were a little low on milk.
So I timed my grocery store run to a point in the day I figured the local HEB would be less crowded, and I went for it.
The store was well-stocked, everyone was friendly and observing distance and mask requirements, and I got what I needed and got home.
But what if I couldn't do that?
Today I'd have had coffee black, which isn't a huge deal, but in a few days I'd have less and less to eat for myself and my family.
A hungry writer is an unhappy writer.
Now multiply that unhappiness across the entire country.
What if families with infants couldn't make a run to get diapers, formula or whatever else they need to keep the kids fed?
What if "experts" from someplace get to tell grocery stores nationwide that it's time to shut the doors and force everyone to use online ordering and curbside or delivery to get what we need to survive?
It's a scary thought.
...So why float the idea of closing off grocery stores to foot traffic?
That's what CNN and its "experts" are doing...
Screenshot from CNN story
If you read the actual story, the "experts" pushing for closing grocery stores to foot traffic are mostly labor union reps, a professor, and owners of small boutique grocery stores..."

After Repeated Failures, It’s Time To Permanently Dump Epidemic Models – Issues & Insights

After Repeated Failures, It’s Time To Permanently Dump Epidemic Models – Issues & Insights--Michael Fumento-April 18, 2020
The … crisis we face is unparalleled in modern times,” said the World Health Organization’s assistant director, while its director general proclaimed it “likely the greatest peacetime challenge that the United Nations and its agencies have ever faced.” This was based on a CDC computer model projection predicting as many as 1.4 million deaths from just two countries.
So when did they say this about COVID-19? Trick question: It was actually about the Ebola virus in Liberia and Sierra Leone five years ago, and the ultimate death toll was under 8,000.
...Since the AIDS epidemic, people have been pumping out such models with often incredible figures. For AIDS, the Public Health Service announced (without documenting) there would be 450,000 cases by the end of 1993, with 100,000 in that year alone. The media faithfully parroted it. There were 17,325 by the end of that year, with about 5,000 in 1993.
SARS (2002-2003) was supposed to kill perhaps “millions,” based on analyses. It killed 744 before disappearing.
Later, avian flu strain A/H5N1, “even in the best-case scenarios” was to “cause 2 (million) to 7 million deaths” worldwide. A British professor named Neil Ferguson scaled that up to 200 millionIt killed 440. This same Ferguson in 2002 had projected 50-50,000 deaths from so-called “Mad Cow Disease.” On its face, what possible good is a spread that large? (We shall return to this.) But the final toll was slightly over 200.
In the current crisis the most alarming model, nay probably the most influential in the implementation of the draconian quarantines worldwide, projected a maximum of 2.2 million American deaths and 550,000 United Kingdom deaths unless there were severe restrictions for 18 months or until a vaccine was developed. The primary author: Neil Ferguson. Right, Mad Cow/Avian Flu Fergie.
Then a funny thing happened. A mere nine days after announcing his model, Ferguson said a better number for the U.K. would be only 20,000. The equivalent would be fewer than 80,000 American deaths
...Soon all the numbers were tumbling. Yet as late as March 31, the New York Times declared: “White House Projects Grim Toll from Virus” citing White House Coronavirus Task Force head Deborah Birx and director of the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci, who in turn cited a model showing deaths up to 240,000. Still awful, but Birx explicitly backed off the Ferguson projection for which she had previously been the Grey Lady’s pompom girl.
Then suddenly Fauci announced a flat figure of “more like 60,000,” the same number the CDC says died of flu two years ago. Probably not coincidentally, until quite recently the agency said there were 80,000 flu victims that year, before lowering it to 61,000 – presumably because people were using that figure to compare to COVID-19 deaths. In any event, the 1968-1969 “Hong Kong flu” killed an estimated 100,000 Americans, or 165,000 adjusted to today’s population..."

Starting on Monday, the state’s parks will reopen. Then on Wednesday, Texans will be able to begin undergoing elective medical procedures again. On Friday, the state will roll out a “Retail to Go” effort whereby retailers in the state will be allowed to operate the way restaurants have, where consumers can order items online or over the phone and then pick them up at the store or have them delivered to their homes. The following Monday, April 27, the “strike force” Abbott has assembled will deliver more reopening recommendations on how to get the state booming again.

Flu season deaths top 80,000 last year, CDC says - CNN
Flu vaccine, even when just 20% effective, saves tens of thousands of lives
2018
"(CNN)An estimated 80,000 Americans died of flu and its complications last winter, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This means it was the deadliest season in more than four decades -- since 1976, the date of the first published paper reporting total seasonal flu deaths, said CDC Spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund.
In previous seasons, flu-related deaths have ranged from a low of about 12,000 during the 2011-2012 season to a high of about 56,000 during the 2012-2013.
Total flu fatalities during the most recent season included the deaths of 180 children, which exceeds the previous record high of 171 during a non-pandemic flu season, according to the CDC.
...Additionally, the nation experienced a record-breaking estimated 900,000 hospitalizations last flu season..."

Elizabeth, New Jersey, is using a Chinese company’s drones to police citizens who fail to employ social distancing guidelines. Past reports suggest the drones are feeding China data.
Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage is deploying drones from Chinese-based company DJI to warn Elizabeth citizens who are walking outdoors not to get too close in physical proximity to other people. The drones blare sirens and issue this warning: “Stop gathering, disperse and go home.”
