"They are trying to compel speech - but only speech of which they approve."--Fans of Best of the Web Today

Fans of Best of the Web Today--Michael Smith shared a link.
"When people hear the phrase "freedom of speech", most think it means that an individual has the right to say what they want, when they want and where they want - and to a large extent, that is true.
But there is another, perhaps more important aspect.
I wrote the other day that "BlackLivesMatter" had become a new oath, something that was required to be proclaimed publicly in order to gain access to certain organizations, to pursue commercial activities and to be granted membership to certain groups.
We also hear from these groups that "Silence is Violence" - there's a reason for that.
They are trying to compel speech - but only speech of which they approve.
The other aspect of the right to free speech also applies to this new "oath" in that our First Amendment guarantees not only the right to speak, it protects the right to not speak.
Americans may not to be compelled by society or government to utter speech with which we disagree.
This is why people cannot be forced to utter the Pledge of Allegiance or even stand for the Star Spangled Banner...Read all.

No religion could have achieved this universal level of obedience--Scientists Skeptical of Anthropogenic Global Warming

Scientists Skeptical of Anthropogenic Global Warming--Barrie Shiroh
"No religion could have achieved this universal level of obedience, and certainly no political organization.
In the time of #COVID19, scientists and their statistics rule our world."
Public trust has even given scientists the power to challenge any political leader who takes a contrary position on how to manage the pandemic, regardless of the system of government.
The delicate dance between scientists and politicians has become especially important because the public has turned overwhelmingly to their governments to lead them through the crisis.
Scientists may suggest a course for us to take but it is up to the government to get us there.
Most political leaders who have decided to go against the scientific "con-sensus" have experienced a decline in public support.
Most political leaders who have taken a more scientifically aligned approach to managing COVID-19 have seen their public approval numbers shoot up."

"Week after week we continue to get economic numbers that are absolutely horrific, and it appears that we are heading for a housing crisis that will be even worse than what we witnessed in 2008.
Back then, millions of Americans lost their homes, but this time around it could be tens of millions.
...Overall, more than 51 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits over the last 17 weeks, and that is by far the largest spike in unemployment in all of U.S. history.
...I know that some people are hesitant to use the term “economic collapse”, but what else are we supposed to call this?...Read all.

Kennedy, noting that the coronavirus is less harmful to children, emphasized that keeping schools closed “is going to do far more harm to our kids than the coronavirus ever can.” The Louisiana senator added that the decision should be up to the parents, but he stressed the importance of schooling for kids’ mental health, education, healthcare, counseling and more.

"Teen Vogue, in its imperishable desire to act as the spearhead for political correctness, published an article titled “Black Power Naps Is Addressing Systemic Racism in Sleep,” in which they plugged an artistic initiative entitled “Black Power Naps,” which argues that blacks have had shorter lives than whites because blacks were not permitted to sleep, and thus reparations must be given in the form of time off from work...

Thank God I'm no longer in the corporate world and within the reach of big corporate HR.

"Thank God I'm no longer in the corporate world and within the reach of big corporate HR.
Yesterday, I was speaking to a friend who jut came back from an expat assignment in Europe to become the head of a division of a Fortune 500 company here in the US.
Image result for "white privilege" trainingHe told me that the explosion of mandatory "race sensitivity" and "white privilege" training flowing down from all corporate HQ was unbelievable in both volume and speed.
He said it is at least double - maybe triple - the wave of #MeToo indoctrination that was just beginning to wind down.
The commonality he noted with the former "training" was that it isn't enough to not be a racist, you have to be "anti-racist", which means you have to actively cheerlead for BLM.
He noted that was exactly what the HR leadership promoted for sexual orientation and how the corporation began promoting "Pride" events and the ritual shaming of #MeToo where males were afraid to compliment a female colleague.
The premise put forth in both cases was that if you didn't celebrate LGBTQ causes, you were a homophobe and if you didn't parse every word spoken to a female employee, you were a sexual predator...

COMMENTARY: Masks-for-all for COVID-19 not based on sound data | CIDRAP:

Image result for flickr commons images surgical masksIn response to the stream of misinformation and misunderstanding about the nature and role of masks and respirators as source control or personal protective equipment (PPE), we critically review the topic to inform ongoing COVID-19 decision-making that relies on science-based data and professional expertise.
As noted in a previous commentary, the limited data we have for COVID-19 strongly support the possibility that SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—is transmitted by inhalation of both droplets and aerosols near the source. It is also likely that people who are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic throughout the duration of their infection are spreading the disease in this way.
Data lacking to recommend broad mask use
We do not recommend requiring the general public who do not have symptoms of COVID-19-like illness to routinely wear cloth or surgical masks because:

ORLANDO, Fla. - After FOX 35 News noticed errors in the state's report on positivity rates, the Florida Department of Health said that some laboratories have not been reporting negative test result data to the state.
Countless labs have reported a 100 percent positivity rate, which means every single person tested was positive. Other labs had very high positivity rates. FOX 35 News found that testing sites like one local Centra Care reported that 83 people were tested and all tested positive. Then, NCF Diagnostics in Alachua reported 88 percent of tests were positive.
