“It’s clear that House Democrats care more about illegal aliens than law-abiding Americans and view criminals as victims,” Tragesser added.
The decriminalization of illegal immigration was already becoming a more mainstream position with the Democratic Party. In fact, before the introduction of the bill, Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren both came out in support of the proposal. Sanders, a clear frontrunner in the nomination contest, has also voiced support for virtually ceasing all deportations.
The New Way Forward, however, takes these positions even farther.

Obama's real legacy can be seen in two places... ---Fans of Best of the Web Today

"They are diminishing in quantity, but there still are progressive partisans who still claim that President Trump's economic success is due to Obama's policies and that the recovery was underway when Trump took over.
The latter is true - America was experiencing a recovery in Obama's second term - the slowest recovery in the history of the country.
Economies are never flat, they are either trending up or trending down, so if you want to understand who did what to whom, you look at the slope of the data to see its rate of increase or decrease.
There is no comparison in the changes in slope of the Trump years versus anything during the Obama years.
Trump wins that one hands down and he shows no sign of growing tired of winning.
...Obama's real legacy can be seen in two places - 1) the rise of the radical left wing of the Democrat Party and its increasing power and 2) the ongoing disintegration of the party organizational command and control structure.
Obama killed the Democrat Party...
...Obama's legacy is not winning two national elections or destroying American healthcare.
The merging of the Communist Party USA and the Democrat Party is."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) got slightly heated during her weekly press conference Thursday when asked about ripping up a copy of President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech Tuesday night.
During the question-and-answer portion of the press conference, the speaker was asked, "You often counsel new members to be dignified in their response to the president, take the high ground; did you step on that message by tearing up the state of the union?"

America's Opinion Journalists Ranked: The Good, The Bad, and The Worst | RealClearPolicy
"Because journalism worth its salt is in short supply, and because everybody loves a listicle, here’s one that rates the journalistic chops of some of the best and worst news and opinion writers.
It’s not scientific but it’s fun to do, and the worst have it coming to them.
The Good:

  • Victor Davis Hanson (American Greatness). It says a lot that the best and most powerful journalist in America today writes mostly for conservative and relatively small-circulation journals like American Greatness. A classicist, farmer, and university professor, Hanson has for several years been laying waste to the media-academic complex, home to much of the country’s most tiresome people. For this reason alone, he will never win a mainstream journalism award.
  • Mollie Hemingway (The Federalist). The second-best journalist in the country...
The Bad:

Are numbers racist? - American Experiment
"...“there is growing evidence that taxes can affect the geographic location of people both within and across countries.”
If we want to make smart policy for our state, looking at the data is not a bad place to start.
So I was somewhat surprised to see this response from Bob Collins, formerly of MPR’s NewsCut (Minneapolis Public Radio) blog:
Bob Collins--@MyLittleBloggie
As soon as I got to the paragraph about the influx of low income people (code for people of color), I knew it had to be from the Klan-robe crowd at the Center of the American Experiment.

The IRS database has just been updated with the addition of two more years of statistics on the movement of taxpayers across state lines, covering the years 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Unfortunately, these new data show that the trend that existed as of 2016 continues: Minnesota gains low-income residents from other states, but loses middle- and upper-income residents, generally to lower-tax states.

Transportation commission approves governor's bond request for roads
"MICHIGAN — Thursday morning, Governor Gretchen Whitmer's road funding plan got the stamp of approval from the Michigan State Transportation Commission.
Wednesday night, Whitmer announced her decision to borrow billions of dollars for road repair during the State of the State address.
...Thursday, all six members of the transportation commission agreed that, however it’s paid for, the funding is needed.
Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan plan calls for $3.5 billion dollars in bond money.
That's borrowed money that will go towards fixing state roads and bridges.
On Wednesday, she said she took action since the legislature couldn't agree on a solution as the roads continue to deteriorate...."

  • From Chicago to San Francisco, several cities across the nation have started to replace some or all their diesel bus fleets with rechargeable battery-powered buses.
  • Why? For the noble quest to reduce the use of fossil fuels to fight anthropogenic climate change, of course.
"Any city council considering following this misguided move should read reports by the Institute for Energy Research (IER) or the January 30 Pacific Standard magazine article showing these cities are getting much less than they bargained for..."

An American hero was denigrated Wednesday as a "political prop" by one co-host on "The View" who objected to the fact that President Donald Trump honored retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles McGee, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, during the State of the Union address Tuesday night.
"I saw reality TV being produced, and I don’t think that’s the place for the State of the Union, and I saw him touting his accomplishments with the black community, and I was offended by the fact that he was trying to use a Tuskegee Airman as a prop, as a political prop," co-host Sunny Hostin said.

The bill would require anyone who is at least 18 years of age and qualified to vote by the next election to cast a ballot. The Secretary of State would decide how to enforce the law, and the San Francisco Chronicle reports that voting would be similar to jury duty, where fines or incarceration would be penalties for neglecting to fulfill the obligation. “This bill would instead require a person who qualifies and is registered to vote to cast a ballot, marked or unmarked in whole or in part, at every election held within the territory within which the person resides and the election is held. The bill would require the Secretary of State to enforce this requirement,” the bill reads.
