- 1813 - During the War of 1812, Captain James Lawrence of the USS Chesapeake gave the order "Don't give up the ship." The Chesapeake lost the battle with the British frigate HMS Shannon.
- 1877 - U.S. troops were authorized to pursue bandits into Mexico.
