Last week, the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Board —after first apologizing for presenting good news— published an encouraging op-ed headlined, “The Food Stamp Reform Is Working.” 

The piece began, “Sorry to be the bearer of good news in these ill-tempered times, but fewer Americans are using food stamps.”

• According to new USDA data, food-stamp enrollment crashed from 42.3 million to 36.6 million in the 12 months between May 2025 and May 2026. 
• Nearly half of states saw enrollment declines of more than 10%, including Florida (-22%) and Arizona (-54%). 

“Republicans,” the Editors snarkily noted, “have ended the literal free lunch for able-bodied beneficiaries and states.”

• Catching SNAP scammers one by one is important. 
• It provides helpful deterrence and adds a much-needed “FO” to the educational acronyms of food-stamp fraudsters...
