How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers | At a Loss for Words | APM Reports

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers | At a Loss for Words | APM Reports:
"...Woodworth had stumbled on to American education's own little secret about reading: Elementary schools across the country are teaching children to be poor readers — and educators may not even know it.
For decades, reading instruction in American schools has been rooted in a flawed theory about how reading works, a theory that was debunked decades ago by cognitive scientists, yet remains deeply embedded in teaching practices and curriculum materials.
...A shocking number of kids in the United States can't read very well.
A third of all fourth-graders can't read at a basic level, and most students are still not proficient readers by the time they finish high school.
...The fact that a disproven theory about how reading works is still driving the way many children are taught to read is part of the problem.
..Teachers are taught the theory in their teacher preparation programs and on the job.
As long as this disproven theory remains part of American education, many kids will likely struggle to learn how to read.
  • The origins
The theory is known as "three cueing."
The name comes from the notion that readers use three different kinds of information — or "cues" — to identify words as they are reading...
  • graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?)
  • syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?)
  • semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?)
...Goodman's proposal became the theoretical basis for a new approach to teaching reading that would soon take hold in American schools.
...But while cueing was taking hold in schools, scientists were busy studying the cognitive processes involved in reading words.
And they came to different conclusions about how people read.11...Read all.

If you missed Glenn's February special, "Ukraine: The Final Piece," you can find it here.
This week, the FBI raided the offices of U.S. companies owned by Kolomoisky in Cleveland and Miami. Additionally, the Department of Justice accused the Ukrainian oligarch of stealing billions of dollars from PrivatBank and then laundering the money through a network of companies all over the world.

Latest Social Science: Better Looking People Are Conservative | Power Line
"...in the past, we’ve reported on social science studies that prove conservative politicians are better looking than liberal politicians, that conservatives smell better than liberals (it’s called “bathing,” libs), and that conservatives are “better groomed” than liberals.
Well now from the journal Politics and the Life Sciences, we have social science research that better looking people trend conservative.
Image result for well duhPhysical attractiveness is an important social factor in our daily interactions. Scholars in social psychology provide evidence that attractiveness stereotypes and the “halo effect” are prominent in affecting the traits we attribute to others. However, the interest in attractiveness has not directly filtered down to questions of political behavior beyond candidates and elites. Utilizing measures of attractiveness across multiple surveys, we examine the relationship between attractiveness and political beliefs. Controlling for socioeconomic status, we find that more attractive individuals are more likely to report higher levels of political efficacy, identify as conservative, and identify as Republican. These findings suggest an additional mechanism for political socialization that has further implications for understading how the body intertwines with the social nature of politics.
The implications of this are immense.
First, conservatives should support subsidizing cosmetic surgery as one means to create more conservatives.
Second, we can see this as yet another reason liberals demand that everyone wear masks, and why mask-wearing will become a permanent goal of the left...Read all!

Michigan lawmakers say Postal Service investigation reveals ‘hundreds’ of late mail reports - mlive.com
Image result for lies from the left"U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, voiced concerns that policies created by America’s new postmaster general are causing a disastrous wave of mail delays across the country.
Since launching an investigation into the U.S. Postal Service, Peters said he’s heard from “hundreds” of Michigan residents who are receiving lifesaving medicines, bills, checks and election ballots later than usual.
Peters and U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield, told reporters Monday they suspect Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Republican donor and businessman without prior experience in the Postal Service, isn’t acting in the best interests of Americans who rely on the timely delivery of mail.
...“We, unfortunately, have a new postmaster general who has come in with the President of United States daily saying how he does not want vote by mail and who has made it part of his platform in to attack the Postal Service,” Lawrence said, adding.
“Our democracy is being held in the hands of the Postal Service.”...Read all.

More money ALWAYS THE ANSWER!-----Michigan clerks: Change needed for November election absentee ballots

Image result for election workersMichigan clerks: Change needed for November election absentee ballots
...This is what Swope, other Michigan clerks and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson say they need for the general election in November:
  • ...They need double the number of workers for November — for jobs demanding increasingly long hours and relatively low pay, combined with the risk of exposure to the coronavirus. For the primary, at least one clerk used federal aid money to pay poll workers $50 bonuses in the form of hazard pay.
  • They support another bill before the Legislature that would allow poll workers to spell each other off in shifts.
  • Benson anticipates needing an additional $15 million in federal funds to cover the cost of hiring more people, acquiring more election equipment, such as high-speed tabulators and automated letter openers, and combating misinformation about the security of absentee voting. Whether that money is available could depend on details of a fifth — and possibly final — coronavirus relief package, still stalled in Congress. Even if the money becomes available, increased national demand for the equipment means some pieces are in short supply...Read all.

What are businesses getting in exchange for battling lockdowns and paying higher taxes?
The Seattle PD's guidelines are that "non-violent" offenders should be "interviewed and released". Businesses are being hit with higher taxes without being protected from crime.
