- 1527 - German troops began sacking Rome, bringing about the end of the Renaissance.

- 1889 - The Universal Exposition opened in Paris, France, marking the dedication of the Eiffel Tower. Also at the exposition was the first automobile in Paris, the Mercedes-Benz.
- 1937 - The German airship Hindenburg crashed and burned in Lakehurst, NJ. Thirty-six people (of the 97 on board) were killed.
- 1941 - Joseph Stalin assumed the Soviet premiership.
- 1942 - During World War II, the Japanese seized control of the Philippines. About 15,000 Americans and Filipinos on Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese.
- 1960 - U.S. President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1960.
- 1994 - The Channel Tunnel officially opened. The tunnel under the English Channel links England and France.

"As PJ Media has reported this week, the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border is worsening.
A dozen Texas counties, many of them not directly situated on the border, have declared emergencies due to the explosive increase in human trafficking that the open border is facilitating.
The Washington Free Beacon reports that the open border is facilitating an additional outbreak of lawlessness. The opioid fentanyl is now flooding across the border.
A porous border and weak security ties with Mexico have resulted in large influxes of fentanyl, a highly addictive and lethal drug, across the southern border. Between October 2020 and March 2021, customs agents seized more than 2.5 tons of fentanyl—a more than 300 percent year-on-year increase. Since 2019, cartels have enjoyed soaring profits due to increased demand for the drug in the United States. More than 90,000 Americans overdosed on illicit drugs last year.
Biden’s policies have led directly to weakening cooperation between American and Mexican drug interdiction agencies.

DeSantis, appearing a bill signing ceremony in St. Petersburg, said the order is meant to bridge the gap before legislation limiting local measures officially comes into effect on July 1.

The hubbub kicked off with a report from the Post Millennial, citing sources within the Seattle police department, that a worker behind the counter at the Chocolati shop on North 45th Street refused to serve an officer and trainee last Tuesday afternoon.
The employee — a white female with green streaks in her hair — said, "No, I won't serve you," the outlet reported, after which the officer and trainee departed.
