LANSING — A proposed constitutional amendment that would require Michigan election officials to verify voters are U.S. citizens is poised to miss the November ballot after a deadlocked vote by a state panel...
The decision was based around officials' examination of a 1,000-signature sample. 
  • The campaign needed 629 signatures in the sample to be deemed valid to be certified for the ballot. 
  • It wasn't clear where the tally ended up, but it was at 626 valid signatures, three short of the threshold, during much of the meeting. 
Houskamp and Paul Cordes, another Republican, voted to qualify the proposal for the ballot. 
But the two Democratic members, Mary Ellen Gurewitz and Heather Cummings, supported rejecting certification, leaving it one vote short...
