A Gulf in Giving: Oil-Rich States Starve the World Food Program
"United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his top lieutenants on Monday are convening the first meeting of the U.N.’s Task Force on the Global Food Crisis. Ban says it will “study the root causes of the crisis,” and propose solutions for “coordinated global action” at a summit of world leaders in June.
Ban might want to consider convincing the oil-rich nations of the Middle East to provide more than the near-invisible amount of money they currently give to the World Food Program (WFP), the U.N.’s food-giving arm, which is charged with alleviating the food crisis.
WFP internal documents show that the major oil producing nations of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) gives almost nothing to the food organization, even as skyrocketing oil prices and swollen oil revenues contribute to the very crisis that the U.N. claims could soon add 100 million more people to the world’s starving masses."

anti-Smoking NAZIS in America

Can anyone explain why, in America today, a person who owns a business could be prohibited by the force of law, from allowing folks to enter his/her business using a legally allowable substance?
Think about it.
You own a bar/resturant.
You want to attract smokers.
Totally legal.
Everyone is OK with your business plan.
But assholes who will never come to your business want to stop EVERYONE from going to your business because ....... well..... just because...
This is 1984 personified.

"We wonder how she has survived to her current 20-ish age in a society that obviously requires boldness, courage and improvisation"
Excellent movie.
See it at The Harbor in Muskegon.
But this review, while mostly accurate, ads a typical dollup of pure liberal-think.
It is amazing that Ebert would suggest that survivors in Communist Romania require "boldness, courage and improvisation".
Survival in Communist Romania required quite the opposite.
Those who possessed "boldness, courage and improvisation" had escaped the country or were brutally killed or imprisoned.
And equally amazing is he never uses the word "communist".
Must be a lib-thing....
But he does equate American pro-life efforts with Romanian anti-abortion laws.
See the movie and thank God you live in our wonderful country.

Patriotic Barack Obama lapel pins unveiled honoring all 57 states
"Yesterday The Ticket broke the stunning news of America's acquisition of seven, maybe eight, new states, according to future president Barack Obama.
He was speaking at the start of a two-day swoop through Oregon, which is already a state.
In Beaverton, which is not a state yet, the Democrat let it slip that during this marathon 16-month party presidential nomination struggle against a bunch of dropouts and this female political zombie from New York who won't surrender short of a silver stake, he had already visited 57 states with one more to go"

Myanmar referendum backing junta rule: reports

Myanmar referendum backing junta rule
"Myanmar's military-backed constitution has apparently won significant support in a referendum, even though many in the country were unable to vote as they tried to cope with the devastation of a cyclone which left many thousands of dead and missing in its wake, media reports from the region said Saturday.
Local counting of ballots indicated that an average of 80% to 90% voted in favor of the draft charter, the Associated Press reported."
Mucho thanks to the AP for this "unbiased" report!
Remember when they were amazed at Saddam's 100% victories?
No wonder we do wonder... about the American, anti-Anti-American MSM.
The bummer, dude is that millions of human beings are at risk.
Total bummer to interfer with glowing "election results"!

First-class stamp prices rise 1 penny to 42 cents Monday

First-class stamp prices rise 1 penny to 42 cents Monday:
"The cost of mailing a letter goes up a penny to 42 cents on Monday, the latest in what are expected to be annual price adjustments by the Postal Service."
A new law regulating the post office makes it easier to raise rates as long as the agency doesn't exceed the rate of inflation. Rates are to be adjusted each May.
And the libs want these folks to run our entire health care system?
Oh yeah..... there's this too.....
The increase comes just a week after the post office announced it had a loss of $700 million in the second quarter of the fiscal year, blamed largely on declining mail volume and rising fuel prices.

County goes with local, not lowest, bidder

County goes with local, not lowest, bidder
"Muskegon County commissioners have no official policy saying they have to favor local companies that bid for county contracts.
But when the bidding is close, commissioners clearly can be expected to favor a Muskegon-area firm over an outsider, even if the outsider is the low bidder. .....
Then the board voted 5-3 to award the contract to Jackson-Merkey Contractors of Muskegon, a regular county contractor that finished second in the bidding, $23,306 higher than the Grand Rapids firm.
Aley and Engle joined commissioners Chuck Buzzell, Lew Collins and Roger Wade in supporting the bid of the Muskegon County firm. Snider, Mahoney and Commissioner Louis McMurray supported the low bidder.

"For William Loper, $3.89 per gallon was the breaking point, the price point at which it no longer makes sense to travel long distance to and from work.
In Montcalm County, unemployment is at 11 percent. After Electrolux left, Loper 'lost my landscape business of 21 years...because everyone lost their jobs, lost their home, they didn't need me to put in a new lawn.'"

Incentives too steep at $900,000 per job
"When Michigan feels it must pay $900,000 in tax credits per job to lure new business, leaders ought to be asking themselves if something more can be done to make the state attractive to the kind of high-tech firms it says it is seeking."
This is nuts!
And consistent with the Granholm administration.

Cyclone tragedy shows how vital local agencies are
"Many of us were glad, then, for the timely presence of the Red Cross and other United Way-affiliated relief agencies that were on hand immediately to help out. Such emergencies often are the worst of times, but reveal the best in men and women."
Another lame editorial from The Muskegon Chronicle.
Yes it's nice to fawn over their favorite NGOs but somehow they "forgot" to mention the funny guys and gals in those weird outfits........ Stephan King suggests they can't read so that's why they joined....
The United States Navy and the rest of our armed forces!
Charities and black tie dinners and nice, but when the cyclone hits, the folks who deliver are our troops.
God love and protect them!

"I was wondering just who John McCain might pick as a running mate and it hit me like a ton of bricks: I predict that after Hillary is finally forced out of the race, McCain will shock the world and pick Hillary Clinton as his vice-presidential candidate!”

Nifong bankrupt
Yes, it may be petty to really enjoy reading this....
"Mike Nifong Bankruptcy: Speaking of the the Duke Lacrosse case, this is a bit of old news, but back in January Mike Nifong had to file bankruptcy to deal with the civil lawsuits that have been brought against him by the exonerated Duke lacrosse players. He lists assets of $243,000 and liabilities of $180 million (presumably contingent claims)."
.......but YES!
That bastard deserves it all.

ARE CONSERVATIVES HAPPY? OR SELFISH?
"The newspaper's usual racial columnist has a different theory. Conservatives are happy, he says, because they are selfish. And he offers this tidbit:"
"Many of the people so proud about being conservative strike me as selfish individuals who don't spend much worrying about life's inequities or the less privileged in our society. If you doubt that, just remember the reaction to the suffering of people caught in Hurricane Katrina by most conservatives.
They thought the people in New Orleans deserved what they got."

Detroit has second-worst commute, Forbes says: "Metro Detroit's commute ranked second worst in the nation by Forbes magazine, behind only the poor folks in Atlanta."
I remember in the 1960s Detroit was in the top 3 worst commutes in the country.
It's NOT the lack of mass transit you fools.
Meebee ya took a ride on the "wonderful" People Mover lately?
No.
It's the NIMBYs and the democrat supported enviro-lonies who have stopped any new roads.

"It's being called a crisis.
School leaders say the student dropout rate in Michigan is a huge problem that's costing taxpayers billions of dollars every year.
Amazing that this WOOD TV 8 post has "crisis" in quotes.
Like it's not a "crisis"?
And how they focus on the costs to taxpayers.
Not the terrible cost to the poor child so ill served by our rotten "educational" system and its union leaders.
