Dam breaks in Europe as deflation fears wash over ECB rhetoric

Dam breaks in Europe as deflation fears wash over ECB rhetoric - Telegraph
A key gauge of deflation risk in Europe is flashing red, dropping to record lows on fears of fresh recession and lack of decisive action by the European Central Bank.
The sudden lurch downwards came as Bank of America warned that France’s debt ratio could rocket to 120pc of GDP within five years, unless the EU authorities take radical steps to reflate the region’s economy. Italy’s debt could threaten 150pc even earlier.
The 5-year/5-year forward swap rate monitored closely by traders plummeted beneath 1.77pc on Friday morning as a global growth scare drove European stock markets to a 12-month low.
“This rate is the most important market signal on the planet right now.
Everybody is watching the chart, and it has just gone off a cliff,” said Andrew Roberts, credit chief at RBS.

Can You Hear Me Now? Cell Phone Taxes Growing

Can You Hear Me Now? Ohio Cell Phone Tax Lower Than Average | Watchdog Wire - Ohio:
Here’s a tax you might not typically think of: the tax on your cell phone.
It’s worth considering.
According to the Tax Foundation, four cities — Chicago, Baltimore, Omaha, and New York City—have effective tax rates in excess of 25 percent of the customer bill.
They report, on average, “Americans pay an average of 17.05 percent in combined federal, state, and local tax and fees on wireless service.
This is comprised of a 5.82 percent federal rate and an average 11.23 percent state-local tax rate.”
....“Wireless taxes and fees are regressive and have a disproportionate impact on poorer citizens,” said Scott Mackey of KSE Partners and co-author of the Tax Foundation report. “Excessive taxes and fees may reduce low-income consumers’ access to wireless service at a time when such access is critical to economic success.”

Exclusive–Military Leaders: Michigan Dem Senate Nominee Gary Peters Exaggerated, Misrepresented Military Record on Campaign Trail

Exclusive–Military Leaders: Michigan Dem Senate Nominee Gary Peters Exaggerated, Misrepresented Military Record on Campaign Trail:
“Gary was pretty much a warm body in virtually all of the units I saw him assigned to,” Semerad said when reached by phone early Thursday. “He was never selected for anything.
.....“Gary Peters has misled Michigan voters on his military service record,” John said in an emailed statement.
“While we certainly appreciate everyone who enlists and serves on behalf of our country, on the campaign trail Congressman Peters, to put it mildly, has repeatedly made less than accurate statements about his time in the Naval Reserve and said things that aren't necessarily true about his qualifications in the Naval Reserves.”
"As a career active duty Army officer and former Congressman, it always concerns me when those running for political office misrepresent their military service record,” former Florida GOP West added. “The case of now Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut comes to mind.”
West compared Peters’ claims to those of John Kerry.

Obamacare Poised to Cause Insurance Cancellations, Networks Silent:
"This year, “Virginia will be hardest hit, with 250,000 policies to be cancelled, in spite of a pledge from the Democratic senator running for re-election,” Jim Angle reported for "Special Report with Bret Baier" Oct. 8.
The news broke within the past two weeks and was reported by several major newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post. The Times downplayed the cancellations saying they would affect “relatively few” people. "

Editorial: Muskegon voters should pass Hackley Library millage in spirit of public-private partnerships | MLive.com:
"MUSKEGON, MI – As difficult as approving 4 mills for road construction in the city of Muskegon will be for voters, we hope that they find the more modest request to pay for a 15-year, $3.2 million bond issue to improve Hackley Public Library reasonable.
The Hackley Public Library building created through the philanthropy of Charles Hackley in the 1890s is a community treasurer that must be maintained for future generations of library patrons, historic preservation and continued downtown Muskegon redevelopment.
We offer our endorsement of Hackley Public Library bond issue on the Nov. 4 ballot.
For the owner of an average $52,000 house in the city of Muskegon, the annual property tax increase to cover the bond issue is slightly less than $14."

6.9 million multiple voters in 28 states, report finds

6.9 million multiple voters in 28 states, report finds « Watchdog.org:
"Some 6.9 million Americans are registered to vote in two or more states, according to a report obtained by Watchdog.org.
“Our nation’s voter rolls are a mess,” says Catherine Engelbrecht, president of the election-watch group True The Vote.
“Sensible approaches to roll maintenance are fought tooth and nail by radical special interests who can use the duplicity in the system to their advantage,” she said.
The latest interstate voter cross check tallied 6,951,484 overlapping voter registrations, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg.
The cross-check program involves only 28 states and does not include the three largest: California, Texas and Florida.
“Duplicate registration is an open invitation to voting fraud,” said Clara Belle Wheeler, a member of the Election Board in Albemarle County, Va.
“This ability to vote more than once dilutes the legal votes and changes the results of elections.”
The interstate cross-check program matches first and last names and dates of birth to identify multiple registrations. But the data are not routinely used to purge duplicates.
“Increasingly lax standards in our election process produce increasingly unreliable results,” Engelbrecht asserted."

The persistence of public ignorance about federal spending

The persistence of public ignorance about federal spending - The Washington Post:
"Christopher Ingraham of Wonkblog points out that a new Pew Research Center survey shows that most of the public is ignorant about the distribution of federal spending.
Only 20% realize that the federal government spends more money on Social Security than on foreign aid, transportation, and interest on the government debt.
Some 33% believe that foreign aid is the biggest item on this list, even though it’s actually the smallest.
It accounts for only 1% of the federal budget, compared to a whopping 17% for Social Security, which is one of the biggest federal outlays and has been for decades.

The Pew poll is consistent with numerous previous studies that reach similar results, consistently showing that the public massively overestimates foreign aid spending, and underestimates spending on big entitlement programs, such as Social Security and Medicare.
British voters are misinformed about their own government’s budget in much the same way.

Ignorance on this point has a significant influence on politics and policy.
A large percentage of voters implicitly assume that we can solve the federal budget crisis simply by cutting unpopular foreign aid programs, without raising taxes or touching entitlements.
That makes it politically difficult to address our looming fiscal crisis (in which Social Security and other entitlements are major factors) in a realistic way."

Setting The Record Straight: Government Demands Disabled Girl’s Backyard Playset Be Destroyed:
Government Demands Disabled Girl’s Backyard Playset Be Destroyed
The city government of Santa Fe Springs in California is
demanding that the backyard playset of a little girl with special needs be destroyed. The Miranda family says that the swings were a gift from the Make-A-Wish foundation, given to her because her seizure disorder makes it impossible for Tiffany to play in a public park.

The little girl’s mom Jessica Torres complained to the city when they asked her to take it down. When I asked the city, ‘So where do you expect my daughter to play?’ they said ‘Well, the city’s not responsible for your daughter’s disability,’” Torres said. “They said ‘Your Tiffany is not our problem.’”

Both won a Nobel Peace Prize-Think about THAT!--------Malala to Obama: Drone strikes 'fueling terrorism'

Malala to Obama: Drone strikes 'fueling terrorism' - CNN.com:
"Washington (CNN) -- The "Bravest Girl in the World" has stood up to President Barack Obama.
Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old shot by the Taliban for promoting girl's education in her native Pakistan, confronted Obama at the White House on Friday about U.S. drone strikes.
In a meeting that included first lady Michelle Obama, the young activist challenged one of Obama's premier counterterrorism strategies.
"I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism," she said in a statement released today.
"Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people. If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact."
The U.S. government has said strikes by the unmanned aircraft are a necessary part of the fight against militant groups, including the Taliban.
In an interview that will air Sunday at 7 p.m. with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Malala said she is far from done serving.
"I want to become a prime minister of Pakistan, and I think it's really good.
Because through politics I can serve my whole county.
I can be the doctor of the whole country," she said."
