Biden’s son Hunter discharged from Navy Reserve after failing cocaine test
Biden’s son Hunter discharged from Navy Reserve after failing cocaine test - MarketWatch: "WASHINGTON—Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter was discharged from the Navy Reserve this year after testing positive for cocaine, according to people familiar with the matter.
Hunter Biden, a lawyer by training who is now a managing partner at an investment company, had been commissioned as an ensign in the Navy Reserve, a part-time position.
But after failing a drug test last year, his brief military career ended.
Mr. Biden, 44 years old, decided to pursue military service relatively late, beginning the direct-commission process to become a public-affairs officer in the Navy Reserve in 2012.
Because of his age—43 when he was to be commissioned—he needed a waiver to join the Navy.
He received a second Navy waiver because of a drug-related incident when he was a young man, according to people familiar with the matter.
Military officials say such drug waivers aren’t uncommon.
Mr. Biden was commissioned as an ensign on May 7, 2013, and assigned to Navy Public Affairs Support Element East in Norfolk, Va., a reserve unit, according to the Navy.
In June 2013, after reporting to his unit in Norfolk, he was given a drug test, which turned up positive for cocaine, according to people familiar with the situation. Mr. Biden was discharged in February, the Navy said.
Mr. Biden said in a statement that it was “the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge.
I respect the Navy’s decision.
With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”

The ‘Brazen’ and Alarming Declaration a Man Made in Front of Houston Police Officers
"An unidentified mosque in Houston called police after a man wearing a shirt with the symbol of the Islamic State refused to leave, according to the Clarion Project, a nonprofit that tracks Islamic extremism.
Before the man was escorted out, he openly pledged his devotion to the Islamic State, seemingly proud to do it in front of police officers."
Government at war with its citizens-------How Chicago turned yellow lights into cash
How Chicago turned yellow lights into cash - Chicago Tribune:
Confronted with questions about a flurry of red light camera tickets stamped with yellow times below the 3-second minimum, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration said the fluctuation of hundredths of a second was normal — imperceptible to anyone behind the wheel of a car.
It turns out that fraction of a second makes a big difference to drivers and to the city's coffers.
The Emanuel administration on Friday acknowledged that it had changed the rules on what qualifies for a $100 ticket, quietly directing its new red light camera vendor to tag drivers even when the duration of a yellow light slips just below the 3-second standard set by the city.
The policy generated 77,000 more tickets and nearly $8 million in revenue for the city over the last six months.

"The battle over a controversial equal rights ordinance is heating up in Houston, Texas, with revelations that the city has subpoenaed church sermons, among other documentation, from five local faith leaders.
Officials have requested that these preachers deliver communications that have focused on homosexuality or the contentious equal rights ordinance, which these individuals have fervently opposed.
The subpoenas, which were issued last month, seek, “all speeches, presentations, or sermons related to HERO, the Petition, Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality, or gender identity prepared by, delivered by, revised by, or approved by you or in your possession,” according to the Houston Chronicle."

"Like rabid dogs in a butcher shop, Republicans have indiscriminately shredded everything in their path, including critical programs that could have dealt with the Ebola crisis before it reached our country."
...In fact the CDC budget is at $6.6 billion.
That money was wasted on assorted junk instead of being used to develop an available Ebola treatment.
Here are some of the places where that money went…
And let’s not forget this…
On May 12, 2001, the Mr./Ms. UTOPIA pageant entitled “Jewel of the Pacific” was held at the Southeast Community College Auditorium. U.T.O.P.I.A is The United Territories of Polynesian Islanders’ Alliance, a 501(c)(3) located in San Francisco, California. The organization was formed “to provide support to the Polynesian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community.” A flyer for the event notes “funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” and “Partial funding by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center.”
In 2001, the Center’s revenue was almost $3 million. In 2003, according to its website, its revenue was a little less than in 2001, but still near $3 million. While federal funding figures are unavailable for 2001, the group reports the federal government provided 38 percent of their 2003 budget, which would equal approximately a million dollars. In 2005, the federal government’s portion grew to 49 percent of its $3.366 million budget, or over $1.6 million.
Despite receiving millions of dollars from the federal government in the past few years, according to the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center’s website, in the last 17 years the organization only has “served over 600 HIV-positive A&PIs.”

- CDC’s “Modest” $200,000 Fitness Center: Includes saunas, zero-gravity chairs, and “mood enhancing” light shows

- HHS and CDC sponsored an August 19-20, 2005, Utah conference hosted by the Harm Reduction Project and the Harm Reduction Coalition — organizations that support tacit legalization of drugs, including methamphetamine. Several sessions planned for the conference appear to promote illegal drug use and risky sexual behavior such as, “We Don’t Need a ‘War’ on Methamphetamine,” and “You Don’t Have to Be Clean & Sober. Or Even Want to Be!”

Lockheed Martin claims nuclear fusion breakthrough
Lockheed Martin claims nuclear fusion breakthrough | Circa News
Lockheed Martin Oct. 15 said its "Skunk Works" team had made a technological breakthrough that would allow for a nuclear fusion reactor small enough to fit on the back of a truck.
The 7ft by 10ft reactor could be potentially be deployed to conflict areas to provide power.
Skunk Works is seeking partners in universities, industry and government labs to assist in development of the reactor.
The team intends to build and test the compact fusion reactor in a year, with a prototype in five years, and a production in 10 years.
Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF) said Feb. 12 that they produced a fusion reaction for a split second with more energy than they put in.
"Really for the first time anywhere, we've gotten more energy out of this fuel than was put into the fuel.
And that's quite unique.
And that's kind of a major turning point, in a lot of our minds
… I think a lot of people are jazzed."

How Ben Carson’s Rhetoric Threatens the GOP
How Ben Carson’s Rhetoric Threatens the GOP - Washington Wire - WSJ
"WALLACE: You are thinking about running for president in 2016.
And I want to talk to you about that in a moment, but it has brought attention back to some of your comments as it does to any candidate potentially running for president.
You said recently that you thought that there might not actually be elections in 2016 because of widespread anarchy.
Do you really believe that?
CARSON: Well, I hope that that’s not going to be the case, but certainly there is the potential. Because you have to recognize that we have a rapidly increasing national debt. A very unstable financial foundation.
And you have all these things going on like the ISIS crisis that could very rapidly change things that are going on in our nation.
And unless we begin to deal with these things in a comprehensive way, and in a logical way, there is no telling what could happen in just a matter of a couple of years.
For the record, I’m sympathetic to Dr. Carson’s concerns about ISIS and the debt and have written about them many times.
But for him to claim that there might not be elections in 2016 because “[t]here may be so much anarchy going on” is quite bizarre.
Even during the Civil War presidential elections were not suspended.
And this is not the first time Dr. Carson has engaged in wild overstatements.
Earlier this year he said that America was “very much like Nazi Germany.”
(He has also called Obamacare “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.”)
This is the kind of rhetorical recklessness that convinces many Americans that Republican leaders are extreme, irresponsible, and fundamentally unserious.
These sorts of comments have an acidic effect on the reputation of a party and a movement.
Dr. Carson has no chance of winning the GOP presidential nomination.
The danger for Republicans, however, is that if he runs for the presidency he’ll be given a rather large platform to share his musings.
And let’s be clear: Dr. Carson’s comments are evidence of a political mind that is not simply undisciplined but also fanatical.
(It doesn’t help that when given a chance to repudiate his initial comments, he invariably defends them.)
These are the kinds of thing one would expect to hear from the fringes of American politics.
Any political party or movement that is associated with such utterances will pay a price."

Failing to Counter the Big Lie
Failing to Counter the Big Lie [Michigan Capitol Confidential]
It is difficult to decide which is the more infuriating – those who persist in advancing a lie or those who stubbornly ignore the possible means of combating it.
The State of Michigan is spending more state tax dollars on K-12 education than the $6,844 per pupil it was spending the final budget year of former Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s administration.
At the beginning of this year it was spending $7,545 per pupil. Beginning Oct. 1, that amount was increased again by $50 to $175 per pupil, with the lowest funded school districts receiving the largest boosts.
As students of propaganda learned long ago, however, if you tell a big lie long enough and loud enough people will tend to believe it.
Polls show that, in spite of what simple math reveals, a majority of Michigan voters believe K-12 spending has been cut under Gov. Rick Snyder.
...As maddening as it may be to see a big lie perpetrated successfully, Gov. Snyder and the Republicans deserve much of the blame.
Their longstanding ineptitude in dealing with the lie has been frustrating — and all the more so because it was rooted a dismissive ambivalence.
At a base level there’s a temptation to say “it serves you right.”
....According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Michigan ranks 8th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in per-pupil spending when adjusted for per-capita income.
Without the per-capita income adjustment, it ranks somewhere between 22nd and 26th depending on mid-decade measuring variations.
The per-capita income ranking means that only six states and the District of Columbia make a greater spending effort toward K-12 education than Michigan.
....Let’s say someone wants to promote the idea that the Detroit Tigers are a lousy baseball team.
They could cite whatever comparatively weak statistics they could find involving fielding, relief pitching and the absence of a World Series title over the past 30 years.
If your job was to defend the Tigers, wouldn’t it be sensible and obvious to change the perspective by pointing out that they have won their division four straight years and appeared in two of the last eight World Series?
This is exactly what Gov. Snyder and the Republicans failed to do regarding the K-12 spending issue. They made it easier instead of harder for their opponents to sell the big lie.
That’s never a good strategy.

President Obama Already Has An Ebola Czar. Where Is She?:
"As the Ebola situation in West Africa continues to deteriorate, some U.S. officials are claiming that they would have been able to better deal with the public health threat if only they had more money.
...What’s particularly interesting about this discussion, then, is that nobody has even discussed the fact that the federal government not ten years ago created and funded a brand new office in the Health and Human Services Department specifically to coordinate preparation for and response to public health threats like Ebola.
The woman who heads that office, and reports directly to the HHS secretary, has been mysteriously invisible from the public handling of this threat.
And she’s still on the job even though three years ago she was embroiled in a huge scandal of funneling a major stream of funding to a company with ties to a Democratic donor—and away from a company that was developing a treatment now being used on Ebola patients.
...Barring that, perhaps the media could at least look at the roles that waste, fraud, mismanagement, and general incompetence play in the repeated failures to solve the problems the feds unrealistically claim they will address.
In a world where a $12.5 billion slush fund at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is used to fight the privatization of liquor stores, perhaps we should complain more about mission creep and Progressive faith in the habitually unrealized magic of increased government funding."

Why Is Antarctic Sea Ice at a 35-Year High?
Nobody really knows, but they have some thoughts
Scientists first started routinely tracking the sea ice that surrounds Antarctica in 1979, and of all the years since, nAccording to NASA, 2014 set a new maximum for sea ice around the southern continent: the ice extent peaked at 7.78 million square miles in mid-September.
one had a higher sea ice extent than this one.
In the last 30-odd years, though, the world has been slowly warming due to global climate change—which is not usually associated with an increase in ice. So what's going on?
Well, honestly, no one really knows. “It's really not surprising to people in the climate field that not every location on the face of Earth is acting as expected – it would be amazing if everything did,” said one scientist with NASA.

Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.
The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide.
