"More than 100 members of the University of Chicago faculty are asking the Obama Foundation to move the proposed library honoring the 44th president to a new location because the plan as currently constituted is “socially regressive.”

The Obama Presidential Center will not provide the “promised development or economic benefits” to surrounding neighborhoods, the professors write and could cost more than $100 million in state funds."

"By calling himself "a very stable genius" on Saturday, Donald Trump invited his psychiatrically inclined opponents to reiterate their claim that he is mentally unfit for office. 
"The level of concern by the public is now enormous," Yale forensic psychiatrist Bandy Lee told The New York Times. 
"They're telling us to speak more loudly and clearly and not to stop until something is done, because they are terrified."

Lee, who edited The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President, thinks the public is clamoring to hear the opinions of brave experts like her. 

...Lee is rebelling against the American Psychiatric Association's rule barring members from diagnosing at a distance public figures whom they have not personally examined. 

The injunction, which can be found in Section 7 of the APA's Principles of Medical Ethics, is known as the Goldwater rule because it was largely a response to psychiatric critiques of the 1964 Republican presidential nominee—in particular, an article in Fact magazine that quoted APA members who described Goldwater as, among other things, "a dangerous lunatic," a repressed homosexual, a self-hating half-Jew, a paranoid schizophrenic, and "a mass-murderer at heart," just like "Hitler, Castro, Stalin and other known schizophrenic leaders."

The APA rejected such wild speculation as unprofessional and unethical, a pseudoscientific cover for political disagreements..."

The stories described threats against parents in China for their sons’ involvement in democracy protests in Australia, the detention of a Chinese-born academic during a visit there, donations from pro-Beijing businesses to the campaigns of Australian senators, and the party’s grip over Chinese-language media on the island.
The country’s domestic spy chief, Duncan Lewis, told lawmakers in June that espionage and foreign interference were occurring at “an unprecedented scale” and were a threat to the country’s institutions, politics and economy..."

"Minimum wage hikes, and the inevitable job losses that result from them, are a consistent topic of conversation for us...here are just a couple of recent examples:

...In fact, for the latest example of the unintended consequences of higher minimum wages, one has to look no further than a pair of Tim Horton's franchises in Ontario, Canada.  
Faced with a 21% hike in minimum wages starting January 1st, with hourly rates going to $14 from $11.60, owners of the two restaurants said they had no choice but to cut employee benefits and eliminate paid breaks to offset their higher costs.  
Per the Financial Post:

Employees at the Tim Hortons locations owned by the children of the co-founders of the franchise say they have reduced employee benefits and cut back paid breaks to help offset Ontario’s $2.40 jump in hourly minimum wage.

...Employee breaks will also no longer be compensated, the letter dated December 2017 read. For example, those working nine-hour shifts will be paid for eight hours and 20 minutes, while those on three-hour blocks will be paid for two hours and 45 minutes.

“We apologize for these changes,” the letter, widely circulated on social media, read. “Once the costs of the future are better known we may bring back some or all of the benefits we have had to remove.”

The alternative would be for the franchises to simply raise prices to offset their higher cost structure, which they did not, demonstrating how little confidence in pricing power businesses have despite the constant media cheerleading about the "coordinated global recovery."

It reminded me of something I wrote in 2003. A slightly edited excerpt:

I know many black people who are Muslim converts. The standard rationale goes along these lines: they want to shake off the “chains” of the American slave master, starting with the name(s) and the religion. Thus, a black Christian man named Joseph Green becomes a black Muslim man named Malik Muhammad, eschews pork, makes his wife, Anita, become Ayesha; makes her cover herself from head to toe, begins to pray five times a day, etc. Hallelujah! (Oh wait. Malik can’t say that anymore.) The chains of the (long-dead) slave master are broken!

But because Joseph/Malik hasn’t opened a book and done his homework, he doesn’t know that Arab Muslims were/are the biggest slavers of black Africans in history, bar none. Because Joseph/Malik doesn’t pay attention to what is going on around him in the world, he doesn’t know that Muslims are still brutally enslaving black Sudanese Christians and animists..."

1. Led Congress to pass tax reform bill providing $5.5 billion in cuts and repealed oppressive Obamacare mandate.
2. Fuel economic growth moving GDP above 3 percent.
3. Boosted economic confidence, causing the Dow Jones index to grow to record highs and at a record pace.
4. Signed an Executive Order demanding that two regulations be killed for every new one, boosting economic growth.
5. Withdrew from the Obama-era Paris Climate Agreement, ending one-sided environmental regulations....

...There are plenty of others but I am sure you get the point. President Trump has been incredibly successful for a “mentally unstable” man during his first year on the job."
