Fetch and Retrieve

By Tammy Derouin

Today's world is full of instant information. Type a question into the search bar and you are given pages of sources to find your answer. You can also verbally ask a question and the computer will verbally respond. What was once a science fiction dream has become reality. We've adapted rather quickly to having questions answered, on the spot, with so little effort being required.

Having instant answers is convenient but there's also a downside. The process of learning how to search for answers is sometimes lost. I remember going to the library and spending Saturday afternoons, in addition to time spent in the school library during the week, looking for information for research papers and other assignments. It would have been much more convenient to sit at home and look things up on a computer. However, the search was in many ways part of the lesson. It took time and patience to get answers.

There was also an understanding that the sources were truthful. Credibility was once a high standard in the world of news and information. Periodicals such as news magazines and newspapers are a common source of information for research papers. Opinions may differ, which was also the purpose of some research papers, but there was a certain trust that the sources would have the correct facts.

I read an interesting article this past week on the history of fake news and how it has always been part of human history. Fake news or propaganda, is used to sway or deceive a population to furthering an agenda. Today's high tech version of fetch and retrieve is very convenient. But, are the sources credible? Do they believe in being impartial and presenting the truth or do they favor a political agenda and therefore spin, re-create or completely disregard the truth.......

How Much Longer Does South Florida Have Until The Real Estate Apocalypse Begins? | CleanTechnica:
Image result for irma hurricane damage"How much longer does southern Florida have until real-estate values in the region collapse on the back of flagging demand?
At some point the reality that the region is not long for this world will have to sink in, and when it does, demand for homes in the region will crater to a degree that not many living there now probably fully comprehend … so, when will that be?
...That article noted that events such as Hurricane Irma are slated to make it abundantly clear to all of those who aren’t senile that South Florida is in an incredibly vulnerable position with regard to sea level rise and climate change.
...The piece from Bloomberg provides more: “It’s too soon to know how Irma affected the market, says Aaron Terrazas, a senior economist at Zillow.
But there’s anecdotal evidence that it’s taking a toll on property values: A company that assesses flood risks is booming, and workshops for municipal leaders to deal with the impact are drawing sold-out crowds..."

Angela Merkel gets a lesson in free speech - Washington Times:

Image result for Flicker commons images Angela Merkle"Alas, not so elsewhere, even among America’s allies pretending to honor free speech. Britain has an Official Secrets Act, which severely restricts what newspapers can print about affairs of state, and stepping out of line invites severe consequences. Germany has a particularly hard time understanding free speech.
Germans pretend to the right to speak freely, but it’s a pretense. They are free only to speak freely of what the government says is OK to say. The fatherland has a tough new line, effective this New Year’s Day, written to curtail “hate speech” on social media. That’s the bad news. The good news is that only five days into the new year the state has struck active resistance."

Jack In the Box CEO Says 'It Just Makes Sense' To Replace Workers With Robots - Slashdot:
See the source image"Per Business Insider, Jack in the Box CEO Leonard Comma told an industry crowd that "it just makes sense" to swap cashiers for inanimate machines in the year 2018.
Not because he thinks 2018 will be the year that fast food gets technologized so much as it's the year that Jack in the Box's home state of California increases the minimum wage to $11.
In fact, wage bumps hit 18 states this year, with California on pace to become the first $15-wage state in coming years -- a prospect that terrifies industry executives.
...What a difference a dollar an hour apparently makes: He told the crowd that with "the rising costs of labor," it's time to start thinking about automating restaurants."

Feds Raid California 'Maternity Hotels' for Birth Tourists - NBC News
Image result for chinese invasion"Southern California apartment complexes that doubled as "maternity hotels" for Chinese women who want made-in-America babies were raided early Tuesday, capping an unprecedented federal sting operation, officials said.
...Instead, the investigation was aimed at ringleaders who pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars tax-free to help Chinese nationals obtain visas and then pamper them until they delivered in an American hospital at a discount, court papers show.
...All told, the feds raided 20 locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties, targeting three competing birth tourism schemes, officials said. The suspected operators have not been charged but are being questioned.
The organizers who allegedly ran the Carlyle site, Chao Chen and Dong Li, used a website to drum up business, touting the benefits of a child with U.S. citizenship: 13 years of free education, low-cost college financial aid, less pollution, and a path for the entire family to emigrate when the child becomes an adult..."

In 2018, this prestigious university, named for two of history’s wealthiest capitalists, freshly infused with a huge quarter-billion-dollar-plus estate gift from industrialist William S. Dietrich II, and where students are hit for $70,000 per year, will be celebrating the birth of Karl Marx."

Trump Ends Temporary Protected Status For 200,000 El Salvadorans - Breitbart

Trump Ends Temporary Protected Status For 200,000 El Salvadorans - Breitbart
See the source imagePresident Donald Trump’s deputies are ending the often-extended ‘TPS’ temporary refugee status for up to 200,000 El Salvadoran migrants, which was first granted when earthquakes hit their home country in 2001.
The TPS decision underlines Trump’s determination to enforce the nation’s immigration laws, and to push his “Buy American, Hire American”  inauguration-day promise, despite growing pressure from the GOP’s business-first wing, Democrats and their allies in the establishment media.
...Many of the El Salvador migrants were living illegally in the United States when the earthquake hit their home country in 2001.
Since then, the “Temporary Protected Status” has been extended 11 times by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama..."

DHS has ended TPS for El Salvadorians - another step of Trump’s racist agenda to force people of color into the shadows.

Congress must act now to save TPS or they'll be complicit in mass expulsion of people who have lived in the US for nearly 20 years.http://wapo.st/2FhaIMn

Politicians like to give speeches, you might have noticed—and modern communication makes it easier than ever for their speeches to reach a broad audience.
But in today's fast-paced world, who has the time to watch or read them all?
As a public service, herewith a major time-saver: a distilled version of every speech you can expect to hear over the next 12 months.

This is a defining moment for our (city / state / nation). We face many challenges, and there are no easy answers.
We have (come a long way / achieved a great deal), but there is still much to do.
There are those who say we are not up to the task.

But to achieve great things, we need bold leadership.

How The FBI and DOJ Intelligence Units Were Weaponized Around Congressional Oversight… | The Last Refuge

How The FBI and DOJ Intelligence Units Were Weaponized Around Congressional Oversight… | The Last Refuge:

"In 2016 the ODNI for President Obama was James Clapper.  The DNI is a political appointment, a cabinet member, of the President. If the executive branch, the President, wanted to weaponize intelligence as a political tool, he/she would have control over such weaponization as an outcome of their political appointees within the: FBI (Comey, McCabe), DOJ (Lynch/Yates), CIA (Brennan), DNI (Clapper), or DoD (Ash Carter). The efficient weaponization of intelligence stems from controlling the hub, James Clapper.
The civilian (representative) oversight into the compartmented intelligence falls to a very select group known as the Intelligence Gang of Eight."

History, Cinema, and the Power of 'Darkest Hour' - American Greatness

History, Cinema, and the Power of 'Darkest Hour' - American Greatness:
See the source image"...The story of “Darkest Hour” concerns a conspiracy by members of Churchill’s own war cabinet to have the new prime minister deposed and replaced within his first days of office, on the grounds that his uncompromising belligerence concerning Hitler was uninformed, irrational, and a threat to British security.
The conspirators, just-resigned Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and the Tory insiders’ preferred successor, Viscount Halifax, are not only elite professionals, their roles represent professionalism to the audience.
They are manifestly respected, experienced officials with nothing impulsive or disorganized about them.
Their Tory faction in Parliament is so well-controlled its MPs decide whether to applaud a speech or remain silent by watching how Chamberlain manipulates a handkerchief.
Chamberlain’s forced resignation from 10 Downing Street is viewed as an unfair slight to a capable public servant.
The two plotters discuss their plan to oust Churchill calmly and methodically.
The film depicts no military or political professional who thinks their hopeless view of Britain’s chances is controversial.
Except one: the new prime minister.
Everybody in government also agrees that Churchill is not merely wrong but wrongheaded, and lacking the mental and emotional equipment for his office..."
